Spelling bee for grown-ups!

GlobeHopper Coffee House & Lounge has a Spelling Bee for grown-ups, this Wednesday, February 24. I am so disappointed I have to work late that night and can’t attend, because I totally won spelling bee championships as a kid and love this idea.

Sign-ups are from 6 to 6:30pm and the spelling starts promptly at 6:30 pm in classic elementary school, get-up-in-front-and-spell-the-word style. Their game is played somewhat like Horse, where you lose a few points if you spell a word incorrectly, but you aren’t immediately out. If time permits, there’s also a bonus Geography Bee. Participants receive a free espresso beverage or 1/2 off a spirited drink. The winner gets a free lunch.

I spoke to one of the co-owners, Erin Hellend, who along with manager Kimmy Certa, just got back from a Barista competition in Atlanta. GlobeHopper also hosts live jazz this Thursday and is celebrating their two-year anniversary this month.
