2012 CAA Tournament: the teams

This weekend, 12 very different teams will face off in the Richmond Coliseum. While all 12 teams are chasing the Colonial Athletic Association title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament that comes with it, each team has a different story.

VCU’s victory on Saturday afternoon put the Rams on the bubble and extended the Ram’s win streak–the longest since 1985. More importantly, VCU swept bitter arch-rival ODU for the first time since 2004.

Even in a “down year” for ODU and a “rebuilding year” for VCU, both teams find themselves in the top tier of the CAA. This is what a rivalry is supposed to be: two physical teams fighting for CAA titles and bragging rights all at the same time.

“Rockstar” Rams romp ODU

The Old Dominion University Monarchs couldn’t handle Virginia Commonwealth University’s “HAVOC” defense Saturday night as the Rams forced 25 turnovers and won 61-48 at home in Richmond.

After a slow start, VCU held the lead over in-state rival ODU for the majority of the game in front of a loud and electric Siegel Center. The Rams beat the Monarchs convincingly, 61-48.

What to expect: ODU at VCU

Some may say University of Richmond, some may say George Mason, but no rivalry is more dramatic, bitter, and important than ODU vs VCU. Saturday at 8pm for the first of what might be three meetings this season, the Rams host the Monarchs.
