Yes, I’m one of those that was supposed to be on vacation this week at the Outer Banks of North Carolina, playing on sandy beaches, paddling my kayak around salt marshes and biking all Route 12. Hurricane Irene may have wrecked that plan, but not my fun.

The James River provides all three of those activities, and you don’t even have to wash the salt off your vehicle afterward. My kids and I played in the sand (and snorkeled) at North Bank Park’s Texas Beach. We plan to paddle this weekend and now that the trails are dry (and hopefully clear of debris) I can take a bike ride on the James River Park Trail loop.

NOTE: I did get in a fair amount of biking on our Plan B trip to the Martinsville area.  Fairy Stone State Park is quite a challenge and I recently biked around Danville as well.  Southside Virginia has some fine mountain-biking facilities.
