A house in the 2800 block of Woodmark Court in the Woodmark subdivision in Wellesley suffered extensive damage after a fire that broke out mid-day on Saturday. Just one of the six residents who occupy the two-story home was inside at the time.

The individual escaped unharmed, but Henrico Fire crews rescued two family dogs from the structure. They appeared to be uninjured, according to witnesses.

Crews swiftly battled the blaze, which started in the attached rear-facing garage of the home around noon, and quickly brought the fire under control. The back of the house, near the garage entrance, sustained the most damage.

Black smoke could be seen towering for miles around the area. Local pilot Brenton Strickler was flying in the area at the time and shot a photo, below, of the blaze from the Cessna he was operating.

Officials say that while the house is not a total loss, it is currently uninhabitable. The residents are reportedly staying with friends while repairs are made.

Henrico Fire officials believe the fire was accidental in nature and are working to determine an exact cause. No foul play currently suspected.

We’ll continue to follow this story as more details emerge.
