Teachers from Deep Run and Mills E. Godwin High Schools who are a part of the Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow program were selected as the State Group Winner of the 2011 Creating Excellence Award. The Virginia Department of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education Services presents these awards annually to recognize exemplary projects that promote excellence in career and technical education.

Teachers from Douglas Freeman, Henrico, Hermitage, Highland Springs, J.R. Tucker and Varina High Schools were also honored with the award.

The award-winning project, The Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow Annual Institute in Henrico County, serves approximately 200 “Teachers for Tomorrow” students each year. Students attend a one-day, countywide event to learn about the methods and characteristics of exemplary teachers. They participate in activities featuring topics such as problem solving, community action, literacy, professional dress, classroom management, effective lesson plans, technology in the classroom, and education funding sources.

“The award is really an honor because what the award’s really saying is that this is a program that has great results and can be used as a resource for others to take from,” said Mac Beaton, director of career and technical education for Henrico County Public Schools.

The Teachers for Tomorrow course is offered to high school juniors and seniors for honors credit. Students are selected by application, teacher recommendation, and must hold a 3.0 GPA. This course is part of the Family and Consumer Sciences division of the Career and Technical Education Department in Henrico County Public Schools.
