The Richmond Chapter of Black Data Processing Associates presented the Middle School Computer Terminology Quiz Bowl on Saturday, May 9 at the Times Dispatch Building in Mechanicsville. Students from Vernon Johns Junior High School (VJJHS) in Petersburg were excited and delighted to represent Petersburg City Public Schools in this Jeopardy game show-style event for the second time. This year, the VJJHS “Mighty Jaguar” team won 1st place. They were quizzed on their knowledge of computer technology, hardware, software and networking.

Each student received laptops for defeating their challengers. The VJJHS participants were not members of a club or a specific class – just students with a passion for technology.

“They prepared themselves well. They practiced with me and at home,” said Mrs. Sandra Ruffin, Coach of the VJJHS team.

“Technology isn’t going away and this will widen their horizons,” Ruffin added.

Many of the students who participated this year are focusing on technology as they plan for high school, she said.

The VJJHS team members were Timothy Brown, Alvonte’ Jiggetts, Tyran Taylor, Kweku Hopkins and Leilia Magee.
