Travelers on I-295 near the I-64 interchange in Short Pump have been dealing with a bumpy ride for some time, but they may soon have their commutes smoothed out. Aging concrete pavement on the highway has been patched with asphalt like quiltwork over the years. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) hopes to change this.

The state agency is poised to receive $250 million of the $694 million in funding Virginia is expected to receive under the federal economic stimulus package. $110 million of the funding will be spent on repaving projects around the state.

This project, the only one in the Richmond area being funded by stimulus money, is estimated by VDOT to cost around $8,362,000. Contractors have three weeks to respond to the call for bids. The selected contractor will repave 9.8 miles of highway from I-64 to the Staples Mill Road exit, a project that will require an estimated 47,867 tons of asphalt.
