The Virginia Department of Transportation approved $40 million in funds on Tuesday for two paving projects, one of which will resurface Interstate 64 throughout the West End from the Bryan Park Interchange all the way to Parham Road, just a couple miles east of Short Pump. The scope of work is approximately 5.5 miles and both travel directions will be repaved.

Branscombe, Inc. of Williamsburg was awarded the contract, valued at $35 million, for the rehabilitation work. The existing concrete roadbed will be repaired and a new asphalt will be paved overtop.

VDOT says paving will include the main through lanes, eastbound on and off ramps and 36 additional ramps. Due to the extensive number of travelers in this area (approximately 140,000 daily), temporary lane closures and traffic shifts will take place overnight and on weekends. Completion is anticipated by November of 2010.
