Henrico police today said an abanboned baby boy found in the eastern end of the county last night probably was less than a day old.

“Thankfully he was found, but he could have died,” Lt. Doug Perry said this morning. “There were no clothes on the baby.”

The discovery was made around 8:50 p.m. by a woman walking by who saw the unclothed infant on the front lawn of a home in the 4400 block of Samara Drive.

Perry said the boy, of African-American descent with light skin, was taken to VCU Medical Center, where he was in good condition.

Police today were continuing what Perry described as an aggressive investigation.

“He’s definitely not from any of the houses around there. We went to every house last night talking to people,” he said. “All indications are that he was dropped off there.”

Perry said Henrico investigators had been in contact with area police departments and hospitals.

Police ask anyone with information to call Henrico police at (804) 501-5000 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (804) 780-1000.
