Get out and enjoy the beautiful spring weather this weekend! From a Healthy Kids Day and Walk and an Eco Fest to an Easter egg hunt and book sale, there’s plenty to see and do around the Far West End with the entire family.

1. Healthy Kids Day & Walk

Saturday, April 9

Join the Shady Grove Family YMCA on Saturday, April 9th from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. for Healthy Kids Day & Walk, a community event aimed at making healthy activity and eating part of families’ daily routines. Bring the family for a day of play, fun fitness activities, interactive nutrition demos and a family walk at 1 p.m. with a free t-shirt for all child participants. There is no charge for this event.

2. Big, The Musical

Thursday, April 7 through Saturday, April 9

Big, the great story we all know from the movies, comes to Deep Run High School’s “Out of the Woods Theater Company.”

  • How: Tickets available at Deep Run High School
  • Cost: $5 in advance, $8 at the door

3. ECO Fest at Colonial Trail Elementary School

Friday, April 8

The 2011 Annual Eco Fest is a fun-filled festival where families can learn what they can do to create a sustainable environment for the whole community. The event will feature eco-themed games, lots of inflatable bouncy houses, a cake walk and an environmentally-themed silent auction. Families can enjoy sweets, treats and picnic fare from local eateries. Exhibitors focused on the earth, reducing energy and the environment will include Whole Foods, TFC Recycling, Junior Master Gardeners, VCU, University of Richmond, Green Living Education Center of VA, and the James River Association.

  • When: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Where: Colonial Trail Elementary School, 12101 Bacova Drive
  • How: Tickets at gate day of event
  • Cost: Children’s tickets are $12 per child at the gate. Tickets for all adults and children under 3 are free.
  • More info: Participants are invited to reduce, reuse and recycle by bringing a book to exchange at a Book Swap

4. Easter Egg Hunt

Sunday, April 10

All are welcome to attend the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Petting Zoo on April 10 from 3-5 pm. The hunt schedule is as follows: 3:30 for 3 Years and under, hunt 3:45 for 4-5 Years, hunt 4:00 for 6-8 years, hunt 4:15 for 9+ years, 4:30 all ages. In addition to the egg hunt, there will be snacks, crafts and carnival games.

  • Where: Christ Church Episcopal, 5000 Pouncey Tract Road
  • How: Just go!
  • Cost: FREE, but pals bring a can of food for donation to the Central Virginia Food Bank

5. Twin Hickory Library Friends Book Sale

Saturday, April 9

Shop from a huge variety of books at bargain prices from 9:00am to 5:00pm! Book sales benefit the Friends of the Twin Hickory Area Library.
