Three juveniles playing with fire resulted in a blaze that destroyed a barn at the historic 18th century Nuckols Farm in Short Pump in February. The children and their parents went before Henrico Circuit Court’s Judge Will, a former school teacher, who lectured them about the dangerous situation they created and the damage they did to their community in destroying an irreplaceable piece of history.

According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the teens pleaded no contest to the crimes. They are required to pay restitution to the fire department, around $531 each, and have to pay the county for the barn, the amount of which depends on whether it was insured. If not insured, the three families will repay $45,000. If the structure is insured, they will pay the county’s deductible.

The three are on supervised probation, convicted of a felony. After one year they are to reappear before the judge for a review of their conduct and grades. Charges may be reduced to a misdemeanor depending on the assessment at that time. They will also have to take drug tests.

The teens will be required to attend the Fire Starters program through the Henrico County Fire Department, a Larceny Reduction Class, which the judge ruled they had to take because they essentially “stole” history from the county, and perform 50 hours of community service at a county facility in order to repay the county through sweat equity.
