Carver Walking Tour

First settled by Jewish and German tradespeople, Carver became a vibrant African American neighborhood in the early 1900’s and today is a mix of students, singles, young families and elderly residents. The walk passes schools, churches, businesses and examples of Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne style architecture. Meet near the flagpole at Maggie Walker Governor’s School, 1000 N. The Carytown Farmers Market is the city’s only Sunday market. We are starting our 2013 season April 14 and will be located in the Carytown Cleaners parking lot at 3300 West Cary Street.

Squirrel-O-Ween

The Richmond Flying Squirrels will host their 3rd Annual Squirreloween event at The Diamond from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 27th in collaboration with the RVA Card. The event is FREE and open to the public. In addition to free trick-or-treating through The Diamond suites, kids can decorate mini-pumpkins, take part in a costume contest and enjoy a variety of inflatable games. Local band The Hit List will be performing on the main stage throughout the course of the event.

Meanwhile, the RVA Card Halloween Carnival will enhance the event by spreading activities through The Diamond parking lots and onto the playing surface itself. Keeping with the local flavor, GrowRVA will be featuring healthy food options from a variety of local vendors, farmers and food trucks. All proceeds will benefit another great community cause in FeedRVA.

The Carnival will then sprawl into right field as event goers will have the chance to take part in a variety of family-friendly games and activities. Each activity will be hosted by a featured RVA business. Family-friendly activities include; scary yoga, Quidditch practice, Halloween music medley, an RVA ghost history, performances from McBeth Music and RVA Has Talent artists.

For the first time, the event will feature a beer garden in The Diamond Tailgate Zone (1st Base Side), and there will be live music in that area throughout the event. Even the costume contest will get a face lift for the 3rd annual event. RVA Fashion Week models will join youngsters to strut their stuff and show off their costumes on the runway in right field.

City Council Formal Meeting

Every 2nd and 4th Mon – Responsible for deciding official Council action, which includes discussing, adopting, rejecting, and amending laws and approving the budget. Formal meetings include a time for pubic comment and are televised live on the local PBS station and are replayed in Richmond on Government Access Channel 17, beginning at Noon and 7:00 p.m. daily.

Family of Assassins: The Surratts of Maryland

But what about Mary Surratt, the boardinghouse keeper who “kept the nest that hatched the egg” of assassination and was the first woman executed by the United States government? Or her son John, a Confederate courier and boon companion to Booth, who fled through Canada and Britain to Vatican City, ending up as a Papal Zouave until he was chased across the Mediterranean and hauled back to face a Washington, D.C., jury that deadlocked and set him free? David O. Stewart, author of several works of American history, will trace the authentic checkered career of this notorious family, who also feature prominently in his first historical novel, The Lincoln Deception, which explores unanswered questions about the Lincoln assassination conspiracy.

Community Harvest Festival at the Siegel Center

On the evening of Halloween, Delegate McClellan will host her 8th Annual Harvest Festival at the Siegel Center, providing a safe place for children to trick or treat. Thanks to the generosity of numerous community co-sponsors, over 1,500 children of all ages will enjoy activities such as face painting, henna tattoos, story time, clowns, magicians, games, dancing, and of course, candy.

Admission is FREE! Refreshments will be provided.
