Light pollution has increased exponentially over the past several decades. Richmond’s night sky usually glows in a fluorescent spectrum revealing no more than two or three dozen stars out of the thousands potentially visible to the naked eye. Once considered just a problem for astronomers, growing research continues to demonstrate the dangers of light pollution to our own safety and health and that of wildlife and whole ecosystems.
We don’t have to choose between outdoor lighting and a dark night sky. Light pollution isn’t inevitable; it’s a sign of wasted resources as we aim much of the light we use into the sky, our homes, and the eyes of drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The solution is easy: use efficient fixtures that put light on the ground, not into the sky, and use just the light we need, where and when we need it.
Join Richmond resident Laura Greenleaf and author Paul Bogard for a discussion of the causes and consequences of light pollution and to learn what you can do to improve outdoor lighting in your neighborhood. Dr. Bogard will read from his recently released book “The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light” and share his experiences traveling to some of the darkest and brightest places on earth. In his book Bogard explores history, philosophy, religion, and art to better understand humanity’s relationship with the night and its window on our universe. “The End of Night” is a compelling call to restore our most fundamental connection with our natural world.
