While many of us are busy decking the halls with red and green, the students at Nuckols Farm Elementary are going “green’ in a different way. Inspired by the enthusiasm generated by last years’ school theme “Growing Up Green,” two teachers, Anna Stacey and Sarah Brockman, have founded a new school club, “The Green Team.”

“We wanted a way to encourage the students to continue those [green] efforts both here and at home,” said Sarah Brockman. The Green Team’s 40 members, which are from grades two through five, are continuing recycling efforts that began last year.

Not to be satisfied with the status quo, The Green Team has instigated several new green projects at Nuckols Farm. In November, The Green Team sponsored a used book drive for children at the William Byrd Community Home, a non-profit organization that seeks to “be the catalyst for transforming the lives of people, particularly children and youth, by helping them move from dependency toward self-sufficiency as quickly as possible” by providing education, community development, and emergency services. Nuckols Farm students generously donated six boxes of used books to the charity.

Future plans for The Green Team include making recycled bird feeders, an Earth Day celebration, planting gardens and trees around the school campus and educating the student body on ways to help take care of the earth.
