From the Richmond Police Department:

As a result of a domestic situation last night, Richmond Police officers responded to the 4200 block of Old Brook Road in an attempt to locate Derrell R. Brown, 23 who was believed to be armed.

Police arrived on scene with felony warrants for larceny, brandishing a firearm and property damage but did not immediately locate Brown.

After surveilling Brown’s apartment for a short period of time, two individuals were seen leaving the apartment and driving off in a vehicle.

The uniformed officers followed the vehicle in an unmarked police car a short distance when shots were fired at the two officers while in the 4200 block of Chamberlayne Avenue. The shots did not come from the vehicle being followed by police.

The officers were not injured and did not discharge their weapons.

After stopping the vehicle it was discovered that Brown was not in the vehicle. Police coordinated a tactical response at Brown’s residence and began negotiations.

Brown later surrendered to SWAT Team members without incident.

As a result of last night’s investigation, Brown also was charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection to the August 27, 2007, death of Joseph Wynn, which occurred in the 2000 block of Maplewood Avenue.

Brown is suspected of firing at the police officers prior to his surrender, however this portion of the investigation is ongoing.
