A group of caring, community-oriented students at Pocahontas Middle School on Three Chopt Road undertook a project to collect funds to purchase a single pet oxygen mask for Henrico County fire crews a few weeks ago, but that effort expanded into a larger project that raised funds for multiple pet masks.

Pet oxygen masks are used very similarly to their human counterparts. When cats, dogs or other pets are rescued from a fire, crews can use these masks to give the animals much needed and possibly life-saving oxygen. The students, ranging from 6th to 8th grade, donated the money to Henrico Fire representatives who came to their school Tuesday afternoon.

“What began as a small fundraising effort to purchase one set of masks blossomed into a huge effort where Henrico Fire will be able to purchase many sets of these masks,” said Chris Buehren of the Henrico County Division of Fire.

The group of children range from the 6th to 8th grades. “It is a great privilege to have this group go out on their own and collect the funds for this such thing,” Buehren added.
