Traffic patterns near Virginia Commonwealth University’s Monroe Park Campus will be adjusted on Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18 as VCU students move into residence halls. In order to ensure safety and order, several streets will be closed or restricted for periods of time to allow students and their families to unload belongings. Automobile volume will also be higher than normal.

This year, some students from the Richmond area have been given the opportunity to move in on Friday evening, but the majority of residential students have been assigned time periods on Saturday and Sunday.

To accommodate move in, VCU Police will be working with VCU Residential Life and Housing, Richmond Police, the Virginia Department of Transportation and others to make the following adjustments to traffic patterns, effective 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday:

  • Franklin Street—Reduced to one travel lane between Harrison and Belvidere Streets. Suggested alternatives—Broad Street, Cary Street, Downtown Expressway
  • Main Street—Reduced to one travel lane between Belvidere and Laurel Streets. Suggested alternatives—Cumberland Street, Downtown Expressway
  • Laurel Street—Closed to through traffic between Franklin and Grace. Suggested alternatives—Belvidere Street, Harrison Street
  • Pine Street—Closed to through traffic between Cary Street and Grace Street. Suggested alternatives—Belvidere Street, Harrison Street
