Have you ever noticed how many people float down the James River on innertubes? There are tons on the weekends, but not everyone has a cute inflatable tube, many just have the black car tire tube.

Likely many of those tubes come from the Advance Auto Parts store at 6909 Forest Hill Avenue in Stratford Hills, just up the hill from Pony Pasture and Huguenot Flatwater. It is the closest auto parts business to that area of the river. According to one of the store clerks – a guy that has worked in the store for six years – there is rarely a day in summer that people don’t stop by the store to purchase innertubes before heading down to the James River.

The store sells just one size — the 15-16 inch version, which fits most standard vehicles — for about $14. The clerk said that he doubts that the store sells the tubes for any other use than for the people going tubing, though that isn’t the business they ever expect for that product. He has encouraged the store manager to overstock innertubes in the summer, just to accomodate the floaters, which sounds like a sound business decision.

I just thought it was interesting to hear of all the tubing activity. I imagine the air compressor at the convenience store across Forest Hill Avenue is the next stop for the tubers.

Hmmm, now where do they get all the coolers and beer?
