The compactors have an internal sensor that triggers a compaction cycle when the unit fills to a certain level. The recycling receptacle handles about 48 gallons of bottles, cans and paper.

While critics in other cities have questioned the units’ cost and reliability, VCU has found the BigBelly machines to be a good investment, said Jacek Ghosh, the university’s director of sustainability.

“This frees up the grounds folks to do what they’re supposed to do, which is the grounds,” he said.
