The RTD has the details on this incident which I’m sure was a bit terrifying at the time.

An apartment resident surprised a smiling burglar late this morning in the Fan District, but the burglar did not injure the resident before running out the back door.

Police said the burglary occurred at 11:53 a.m. at an apartment building in the 1400 block of Grove Avenue that is just west of Virginia Commonwealth University’s main academic campus and is popular with students.

Police said the resident walked in and found the suspect unplugging a television. The suspect smiled at the resident before leaving out the back door, carrying the television and several other items, police said.

The suspect, who did not display any weapons, was described as a black man, 20-25 years old, between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 7 inches tall with a medium build, dark complexion and wearing a red ball cap with the letter “C” on the front, a black puffy jacket, dark pants and carrying a purple backpack.

Anyone with any information can call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by their tip. Both methods are anonymous.
