Almost exactly two years after a three-alarm fire devastated popular local restaurant Zorba’s, the Far West End Greek & Italian eatery has reopened following extensive renovations. The restaurant, in the Tuckernuck Plaza shopping center, has been a staple in the community since opening in 1998.

About 20 employees were displaced by the closure of the restaurant, and for a time, owner Mehmet Akpinar was unsure if he would be able to re-open. Akpinar said his restaurant was so busy during the restaurant’s soft re-opening that he was forced to turn away customers until the kitchen was back at full capacity. The layout of the restaurant is completely new, but the original menu remains.

Near the corner of West Broad Street and Pouncey Tract Road, the once bustling Miller’s Neighborhood Market has closed down. The convenience store and gas station was owned by Miller Oil, which operates stores in Richmond, Williamsburg, Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia. Miller’s could not be reached for comment regarding the closure.
