The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has closed the Short Pump Crossing ABC Store located at 3406 Pump Road for remodeling as of Saturday, February 13. The store will reopen on Monday, March 1 at 10:00 a.m. according to the Department website.

The Department says the improved layout, which has already been implemented at other locations, “balances creativity with functionality by considering visual appeal as well as security, maintenance and accessibility for the disabled. Color combinations, ergonomically shaped counters and aesthetically pleasing displays are some of the focal points.”

A few miles away, the Virginia Department of Transportation is holding a public information meeting regarding a $3 million improvement project along Pouncey Tract Road in Hylas and Rockville, a few miles north of Short Pump. A short presentation will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by an open question and comment period, Wednesday, February 17 at the Cochrane Branch Library in Rockville. Contractor J.L. Kent & Sons, Inc. will be on hand.

The project will involve widening and paving the existing shoulders six feet to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians. In addition, the contractor will upgrade road drainage structures and make adjustments to the road alignment to improve sight distance. Construction will begin in late February of this year, with completion expected in May of 2011.

Drivers can expect periodic overnight and daytime detours on Pouncey Tract Road during construction, according to Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Dawn Eischen. Residents, businesses and emergency vehicles will continue to have access to properties along Pouncey Tract Road during these detours and throughout construction. VDOT plans to announce all scheduled detours via local media and electronic message signs along Pouncey Tract Road several days prior to implementing the detour.

Residents and other interested parties can call 804-752-5511 for more information on the meeting or project.
