SALES/SPECIALS

**** You are cordially welcome to a special year-end celebration of Edgar Allan Poe’s bicentennial year, Friday, DECEMBER 10 at the site of Poe and Virginia Clemm’s 1836 honeymoon, 12 West Bank Street, Petersburg, Virginia.
As part of Petersburg’s regular Friday for the Arts, Rivers’ Edge will feature a one-man show by Richmond artist Sterling Hundley, marked by the public release of the limited edition print, “Poe’s Honeymoon,” signed and numbered by the artist, known for his work in Rolling Stone and Virginia Living. The striking illustration, featured in the January 09 issue of Richmond magazine, is the first, and the only known artist’s depiction of Poe’s honeymoon and is destined to become a sought-after collectible.
Limited to an edition of 200, each will be signed, numbered, and dated 2009 by the artist at the very site the couple stayed. Anyone purchasing the print on site will be entitled to a very special treat—a pre-restoration look at the upstairs where the couple stayed. **** 19th ANNUAL GHOST WATCH AT CENTRE HILL MANSION
Sunday, January 24, 2010, at 1 Centre Hill Avenue, Petersburg, Virginia, 23803, from 6:00pm until 9:00pm.
Centre Hill Mansion has served as the home of many notable Virginia families–the Bollings, the Davis’ and the Pryor’s. It has also played host to three U.S. presidents: Abraham Lincoln, John Tyler and William Howard Taft. As the Civil War drew to a close, the mansion also served as the headquarters for Federal soldiers under General George L. Hartsuff. Will this be the year when some of the former residents or visitors make an appearance?
According to the accounts from residents of this landmark house, every January 24 at 7:30 pm a regiment of soldiers, presumably Civil War, makes their presence known at the mansion. Legend states that at 7:30 pm the door leading into the office is heard to open. Then a noise, such as soldiers marching along the passageway, up the stairs with their sabers clanging, is heard going into the room over the office. Approximately twenty minutes later, the soldiers are heard descending the staircase, crossing the hall and leaving after slamming the door. Then all is quiet.
The house has also been noted as the home of another ghost, a beautiful woman dressed in white, who has been seen frequently by people strolling on the grounds. No one has ever known who she was. This “appearance” began to occur in the latter part of the 19th century. Once during this time, a small child living in the house told his mother of a “pretty lady” who had visited him during the night, sat on the side of his bed, held his hand and talked to him. He indicated that he could see right through her. The description he gave perfectly matched that of the woman others had seen in the window above the front entry door.
Mrs. Campbell Pryor lived in the house in the late 1890s and told of the playing of a little melodeon that stood in a corner of the library (now in the north parlor). Many times she heard the playing of music by invisible hands as there was not anyone other than herself in the house.
Her husband also had a story to tell. He once had a bedchamber in a small room on the first floor near an office, but apparently the ghost felt this room belonged to him. Every time Mr. Pryor retired for the evening and turned off the lights, invisible hands jerked the coverings off the bed and threw them into the middle of the floor.
One additional event will take place at the mansion during the evening. Mr. L. B. Taylor, author of the series “The Ghost’s of Virginia”, will be there to sell and sign his books. Several areas not regularly open to the public (the attic and the service area) will be on the tour of the house. This promises to be one of the best Ghost Watches ever, so please join us for this exciting evening!
Space is limited and reservations must be made in advance at Centre Hill Mansion, 1 Centre Hill Avenue, Petersburg, Va. 23803. Ticket Prices: Adults: $5.00 Children ages 7 – 12: $3.00. For additional information please contact Centre Hill Mansion at: (804) 733-2401.
