Joey Rodriguez, as shown above, is leaving VCU to play basketball closer to home in Florida. From the Orlando Sentinel comes word of one of VCU’s most popular basketball players over the last two seasons.

Rodriguez said he finalized the decision Monday to enroll at Rollins — where he will be eligible to play in 2009-10. Rodriguez was granted a release from VCU last week after the Rams lost Coach Anthony Grant to Alabama. Grant recruited Rodriguez to VCU.

“Once Coach Grant left, I started looking to leave. He was the one who brought me here,” Rodriguez said. “To tell you the truth, it’s always been kind of tough to be up here, away from family and friends.”

Now the pressure is on the Rams new head coach Shaka Smart to come up with a point guard for next season. He has two scholarships open. One would think there’s a clever kid out there somewhere who’d like to pass the ball to Larry Sanders.
