Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder announced today that the U.S. government will provide $1 billion in grants to law enforcement agencies in every state to employ and rehire law enforcement officers. Thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Petersburg Police Bureau will receive $814,000 of the stimulus money for five (5) officers. Reported crimes for the previous calendar years, community policing activities, budget changes, poverty levels, unemployment, and foreclosure rates in the area were factors used in the decision to fund the grants. More than 7,200 applications were received by the Department of Justice for more than 39,000 officer positions. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) will administer the grants. www.cnn.com
