Petersburg Area Art League (PAAL) announces our next exhibit to be held in conjunction with Old Towne Petersburg’s next Friday for the Arts! festival on October 9, 2009.
Please help us welcome photographer CHRISTA KREEGER BOWDEN, who brings to PAAL a visually fascinating collection of fallen insects, captured in excruciating detail, clarity and beauty through a combination of 19th and 21st century photographic processes. For Christa, her tiny subjects “embody the idea of the still life, the nature morte, in that they are beautiful and worthy of artistic evaluation. It is the gift of photography that their beauty can be immortalized, and essentially transformed by the artist’s gaze. These are not biological studies of specimens, and these photographs are very definitely made, not taken.”
Christa is an Assistant Professor of Art at Washington & Lee University, where she started the photography program in 2006. Her work explores the use of a flatbed scanner as a camera, as well as alternative and 19th century photographic processes. She is the recipient of a 2009-2010 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, and was a 2005 nominee for the Santa Fe Prize for Photography. The opening reception for Christa will be held in our main gallery from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on October 9, and her artwork will remain on display through November 6.
