An overhead sign collapsed on Interstate 295 North near the Route 33 exit Saturday afternoon around 2:30 after the driver of a Cadillac veered off the right shoulder of the highway and struck a steel beam supporting an exit sign that spanned the entire roadway.

The driver, identified by State Police as 49-year-old Michael Edwards of Richmond, was charged with DUI and refusal to take a blood alcohol test.

Edwards’ injuries were described as minor and he was kept overnight at VCU Medical Center. The highway reopened to traffic just before 6:00 p.m. Saturday.
