FROM MORNING TO NIGHT: DOMESTIC SERVICE IN THE GILDED AGE SOUTH
The City of Petersburg and the Department of Tourism present From Morning to Night an exhibition exploring domestic service in the gilded age South. The exhibit will be on view from Saturday October 17, 2009 until Saturday March 14, 2010 at Centre Hill Museum, 1 Centre Hill Ave. Petersburg, Virginia 23803. Developed by Richmond s Maymont Foundation, this traveling display presents a distinctly southern perspective on domestic service at the turn of the twentieth century.
America s Gilded Age (ca. 1880-1910) was a time of dramatic social, economic, and technological change. Rapid industrialization fueled a growing middle class. Enormous personal fortunes were developed by some while untold others endured unemployment and poverty. In the South, where paid labor replaced slave labor after the Civil War relationships between families and their workers, the great majority of them African Americans, varied widely. No one, however, remained unaffected by the changing social and political landscape of an increasingly segregated South. This exhibit explores how domestic service jobs held mainly by African Americans brought many of these dynamics into the private realm of the home. The exhibition is the last in a series of programs and exhibitions on early twentieth century history that have been sponsored by the Petersburg Museums throughout the year commemorating the centennial anniversary of President Taft s visit to Petersburg.
Starting in October, museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am 5 pm and Sunday 1 pm 5 pm. Starting on January 5th, Tuesday s hours will be 1 pm 5 pm. The exhibition is included in the admission fee. Guided tours of Centre Hill are offered every hour on the half hour during the museum s opening hours. For more information call (804) 733-2401 or email email@example.com.
Petersburg Festival Chorus Seeks New Voices For Its 20th Anniversary Season
Now recruiting new singing voices for this, its 20th anniversary season. Any adult soprano, alto, tenor or bass with a passion for singing is encouraged to attend an open rehearsal. Those auditioning do not need to take a prepared song, but should be prepared to sing.
As our banner 20th anniversary season is about to unfold, we are looking for people who love to sing and want to participate in an exciting year of choral programs, said Scott Flaherty, this year s chorus president. Auditions are very relaxed and un-intimidating, and I encourage anyone with an interest in singing on stage in front of enthusiastic audiences to try us out.
The chorus produces two major concert series each year, choosing from a wide variety of musical styles, including classical, Baroque, Renaissance, spiritual and contemporary. The chorus approximately 40-members rehearse every Tuesday night from 7 to 9 p.m., beginning this year on September 15, at the barn on the Richard Bland College campus. Newcomers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early.
This fall, under the leadership of music director Sandi Thomas, the four-part chorus will be rehearsing for their holiday performances.
On Saturday, December 5th, at 7:30 p.m., the chorus will perform at Trinity United Methodist Church on Sycamore Street in Petersburg. This concert will also include the much beloved Handel s Halleluiah Chorus.
For more information on the Petersburg Festival Chorus please contact Ginia Sullivan at 862-3706.
