The Fall Family Festival is this Saturday, Oct. 17!!! Come on down to Old Towne for a fun day for everyone in your brood. Beginning with the Farmers Market at 7am and continuing throughout the day, until 6:30, activities include:

Kidz Zone with entertainment for children of all ages including a petting zoo and stage performances by: Bob & Judy Puppeteers, Julian Pittman Illusionist, and Signora Bella Equilibrist.
Other features of the Festival will include art exhibits and an antique & vintage motorcycle show and historical walking tours.
Traditional festival food will be provided by local vendors. There will be a Chili Throw-Down hosted by Petersburg-area non-profit organizations.
Music for the day begins with folk music performed by Sonny Bevins and Friends at the Farmers Market at 7am, and throughout the day on the main stage with local talent represented by: Virginia State University, Petersburg High School and the Appomattox Regional Governor s School in addition to Baby Huey & the Babysitters, The Top s Band, and The Indigenous Gourd Orchestra.
Virginia State University s School of Agriculture will offer educational and entertaining programs including the Aquaculture Program and other state-of-the art ventures.

Henricus Historical Park
Things That Go Bump in the Night! from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 23-24.
This program will feature costumed living history interpreters reviving old English and Native American legends and folklore. The public is invited to join colonists and Indians by the firesides of 1611-1622 Virginia as they recount eerie and strange tales of their homelands.
The program has been developed in such a way that park visitors may capture the essence of what it felt like to be a colonist in a dark, mysterious and wooded landscape, exposed to uncertain perils, understand the connection of the harvest season to many of the European superstitions and listen to entertaining tales.
Those attending are invited to bring a favorite blanket, warm up by the fire and enjoy an evening of old-fashioned, traditional family fun. Pre-registration is required. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

HISTORIC ALL HALLOW S EVE TOURS
Saturday, October 31 in Blandford Cemetery on Crater Road. The focus of the guided walking tours is the history of the cemetery and accounts of some of the permanent residents of Blandford Cemetery portrayed by costumed interpreters. Each tour features the stories of prominent businessmen, soldiers and civilians, as well as tales of an unrequited love and of a friendship with Edgar Allen Poe.
There is no vehicle parking allowed at the site. Event parking will be available at the gravel lot east of the Farmer s Market, next to the McIlwaine House (corner of Cockade Alley and Old Street).The tour begins when participants board the shuttle bus to the Reception Center at the cemetery. After participants arrival and check-in, the tour guides will meet the groups and proceed to the cemetery for the sixty-minute tour. Participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear walking shoes.
Tickets for the tour are $7.00 per person for adults and $5.00 for children under twelve. Reservations for tour times are required and can be made at the Blandford Church Reception Center, 111 Rochelle Lane. Space is limited. Hours of operation for the Reception Center are Tuesday Saturday, 10:00-5:00, and Sunday, 1:00-5:00. The Reception Center is closed on Monday. Panel discussion on John Brown s Raid to be held in Petersburg at Union Station, 103 River Street, on October 15th at 7 p.m.
Panel participants include Ben Greenbaum, J.E.B. Stuart, IV and Dr. Chris Stowe. This free program is being held in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of this important event in American history and is sponsored by the Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc. (HPF) and the City of Petersburg.
The discussion will focus on the October 16, 1859 raid that most experts agree was a major catalyst for the Civil War. Late in the evening that day, led by abolitionist John Brown, a group of 21 armed insurgents raided the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry (then Virginia), planning to ignite and arm a slave insurrection. Brown s raid was defeated by a detachment of 86 U.S. Marines led by Col. Robert E. Lee and Lt. J.E.B Stuart, the troops closest to Harpers Ferry at the time.
Brown was captured, tried for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia and hanged. The raid itself was a failure, but the event made Brown a martyr. Frederick Douglass, a former slave and abolitionist, said of Brown, If John Brown did not end the war that ended slavery, he did at least begin the war that ended slavery. The three panelists will address Brown s life and activities before, during and after the raid, the response to the raid by then Governor of Virginia Henry A. Wise, the involvement of the Petersburg and Richmond Grays and the role of Lt. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart in the capture of Brown and his men.

FROM MORNING TO NIGHT: DOMESTIC SERVICE IN THE GILDED AGE SOUTH
The City of Petersburg and the Department of Tourism present From Morning to Night an exhibition exploring domestic service in the gilded age South. The exhibit will be on view from Saturday October 17, 2009 until Saturday March 14, 2010 at Centre Hill Museum, 1 Centre Hill Ave. Petersburg, Virginia 23803. Developed by Richmond s Maymont Foundation, this traveling display presents a distinctly southern perspective on domestic service at the turn of the twentieth century.
Starting in October, museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am 5 pm and Sunday 1 pm 5 pm. Starting on January 5th, Tuesday s hours will be 1 pm 5 pm. The exhibition is included in the admission fee. Guided tours of Centre Hill are offered every hour on the half hour during the museum s opening hours.
