A plan to build a road to connect 2nd Street with Tredegar Street just east of the Robert E. Lee Bridge has been approved.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports the city planning commission approved the plans Monday.

A plan to build a road from South Second Street to Tredegar Street near Richmond’s riverfront will have to accommodate potential passage along the historic James River and Kanawha Canal.

The Richmond Planning Commission voted unanimously Monday to approve conceptual plans for the proposed Second Street Connector, provided that the canal is protected with a bridge or other structure.

Commission members acknowledged that the dry and overgrown section of canal may never be restored like the nearby Haxall Canal, but they didn’t want to be remembered as shortsighted. The canal extends about one-third of the way down the hillside from Second Street.
