On my way to work this morning, I witnessed four city lawn mowers at work in Byrd Park in the middle of the vita course. It gave me peace, but I allowed myself to imagine Marty Jewell watching that activity and throwing a tantrum.

Why, because Jewell apparently has forgotten the value of parks and the people who make the parks great in Richmond. As expected, Jewell, the 5th District city councilman, was just blowing smoke about proposing to cut $100,000 from the budget for the James River Park and money from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities.

I saw emails circulating among many citizens that emailed their councilpersons to express their opposition to Jewell’s threat to cut the parks budgets. In fact, on both the Richmond Times-Dispatch and NBC12 articles, the James River Park wasn’t even mentioned — it was a non-issue. The media seemed much more focused on the feud over the $100,000 raise for the office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the fact that Jewell made himself a negative focus and threw chaos into an important work session.

A moment like this should not be forgotten, and if Jewell does try to run for office again, please remember this ill-fated smokescreen.

One more thing to point out.  I find the logo in the middle of the 5th District in the below image to be very ironic.
