More than a dozen people have been displaced from their units in the Colonial Village Apartments after a two-alarm fire swept through the upper floor of their building Sunday morning. Henrico Fire crews arrived at the building in the 4200 block of Whitford Court, at the intersection of Gaskins and Springfield Roads, just after 9:30 a.m. to find heavy smoke and flames coming through the roof.

All residents made it out safely, and firefighters even helped the smallest of residents to safety, reportedly rescuing a pet hamster from the unit where the blaze started.

The Red Cross was on hand to provide assistance and temporary lodging for tenants of affected apartments.

Crews were on scene repairing the roof of the building just hours later.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
