Man dies in James River after jumping from Route 288 bridge

Hikers found a man’s body in the James River at Robious Landing Park Wednesday at about 4 p.m. as they walking along the trails.

On Tuesday at 8:50 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to Route 288 southbound on the James River Bridge in Goochland County.  According to a witness, a male subject stopped his vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway and jumped from the bridge.

The Virginia State Police Aviation Unit and Search and Recovery Dive Team with the assistance of the Goochland and Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office, Game and Inland Fisheries, and the Henrico County Fire Department searched the area but did not locate the male.

The bridge is about two miles west of the park. The man was 44 years old and was from the Richmond area.
