Crews are nearing the final stretch of a major water project along Three Chopt Road in Short Pump that has had the road down to one lane daily since last fall. Once completed, the pipes being buried beneath the roadway will pump more than 12 million gallons of water per day to Goochland County residents.

While the project is taking place in Henrico, not a dime will be funded by Henrico taxpayers, as Goochland County is footing the bill. It’s the final phase of an agreement between the two municipalities that was made in 2002. Goochland already draws water from several sources in Henrico County.

Contractor R. R. Snipes Construction is installing pipe three and a half feet below ground level that will eventually connect Henrico’s water treatment facility at Three Chopt and Pemberton Roads to Goochland residents. The current leg of the project will conclude near the entrance to the Barrington subdivision at Thamesford Way, behind West Broad Village.

A side benefit for Far West End residents will be increased water pressure to the northern Short Pump area including the Wyndham and Twin Hickory communities, both of which are currently facing lower than desired water pressures, according to Henrico officials.

Temporary patch work has been put into place at the end of each construction day and the entire road will be resurfaced upon completion of the project later this year.

This is not the last project slated for this section of Three Chopt Road in the near future. Widening of the road from Gaskins Road to Thamesford Way, from two to four lanes, is expected to start in 2013, pending federal funding.
