YMCA Bright Beginnings, a program now in its 20th year of giving area children from low-income families back-to-school shopping trips, each year helps more than 2,300 children. As a part of this program, a local shoe store in Short Pump helped fit around 400 of these children with new shoes this year.
Saxon Shoes helped kids in need select and correctly fit shoes at both their Richmond and Fredericksburg locations, a number totaling 600 pairs between the two stores.
“Fitting kids in need with free shoes for back-to-school has become a Saxon tradition in Richmond and now in Fredericksburg,” said Gary Weiner, president of Saxon Shoes. “…The benefit to our staff cannot be measured when a young child looks up at you and says ‘Thank you for my new shoes’ with a smile from ear to ear.”
Children who participate in YMCA Bright Beginnings also take a trip to a local Target or JCPenney store, where they are paired with adult volunteers who help them shop for the other items they need.
“The children and the Y are very appreciative of the generosity of Saxon Shoes for outfitting each child with well-fitting shoes that feel and look great,” said Tito Luna, Director of Community Development for the YMCA of Greater Richmond. ”This partnership really gets the kids excited about going back to school and prepares them for success.”
