Dr. Elizabeth O’Leary will be discussing the history of the Carillon and the surrounding neighborhoods during her lecture at the Virginia Historical Society on November 14 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm.

She will relate the story of the area’s land and people from the colonial frontier to antebellum farmland; Gilded Age streetcar suburb to Jazz Age development; site of post-war housing boom to the hub for civil rights activism in Richmond. The lecture will provide special focus on the formation of the Carillon Civic Association and its role in the turbulent 1960’s and ’70s in nurturing one of Virginia’s first successfully integrated communities. The lecture is free to Virginia Historical Society members and is $5 for adults.
