As we enter month number 6 for 2012, the East End has recorded just 1 homicide for the year (in April in Mosby). Over the previous 5 years, in which we have averaged 12 killings per year, the East End has seen just over 5 killings by this date. 2011 was the best of recent years, with only 2 killings by this date (and which ended the year with 13).

In 1994, 19 people had been killed in the East End by this date — just about 1 every week.

Richmond as a whole has seen 16 killings, about par for the course in recent years. Balancing out the drop in fatal violence in the East End, the Southside has seen its body count jump over previous years’ counts. Notably, three of the city’s homicides have come from a 2-block stretch of Chamberlayne Avenue.
