Organizers of the Fourth Annual Juneteenth Celebration hope to host a weekend of activities including walking tours of historic Pocahontas Island, a ceremony honoring the U.S. Colored Troops, reenactments, lectures, music, food, and activities for children and families.

According to Juneteenth Chairperson Treska Wilson-Smith, the planning committee would like to have a three-day event, but the scale of the celebration will depend on the level of contributions received by Southside Virginia Council for the Arts, sponsor of the event. Although some revenue will be derived from charging vendors, additional funds are needed to support the full schedule of events proposed.

In a letter to business owners and previous contributors, Wilson-Smith provided background information about the importance of Juneteenth, why it is celebrated in Petersburg, and details of the proposed event program.

Sponsors’ names will be published in a celebration booklet in which ads can be placed.

Donations can be sent to Southside Virginia Council for the Arts, 216 N. Sycamore St., Petersburg, VA 23803.
