The family and friends of Jerry A. Nutter will gather at Belle Isle the morning of Labor Day from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to clean trash from the James River in the memory a man who died while whitewater kayaking at Pipeline Rapids in December 2007.

I’ve written about my unique angle and the lessons I learned from Mr. Nutter’s death that I think of every time I kayak. Since that time in late 2007, I’ve become friends with his son, David Nutter, who was with him when he died at Pipeline.

The family and friends of Jerry Nutter have had cleanups in his memory annually since his death.  I participated with my son two years ago, and since then I’ve become much more in tune with the need to clean the river we all love so much.
