While the City of Richmond continues to embrace environmentally-friendly iniciatives and improve sustainability, the James River Park has been at recycling and taking care of Mother Earth for a long time.
The City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities provided recycling numbers from this spring for the James River Park:
- March – 4,800 lbs of glass and plastic, 680 lbs. of cardboard, and 2,340 lbs. of scrap metal
- April – 4,100 lbs. of glass and plastic, 680 lbs. of cardboard, and 920 lbs. of scrap metal
- May – 5,400 lbs. of glass and plastic, 520 lbs. of cardboard
These weight estimates are based on the number of supercans collected, estimating that one supercan of glass and plastic weighs 100 lbs. and one supercan of cardboard weighs 40 lbs.
Park manager Ralph White said that while the park is being used by more people, more people are also placing their trash in the receptacles. JRNH first reported on recycling in the park in September 2010.
