I love it when the oppresive heat of summer ends and we can get back to using the air conditioner less and enjoy the chillier morning and evening weather.

See my blog from last year for suggestions on four areas of the James River Park System that provide opportunities for long walks when you’re seeking autumn leaves in a natural setting.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Andy Thompson had some good suggetions for places to see fall folliage as well, including the James River:

Think of that winding, watery highway known as the James River. All you need is a kayak or canoe, and you’ve got your own byway lined with blazing fall colors.

Chances are, the traffic won’t be bad.

Pick a flatwater float, like Maidens to Watkins Landing or Huguenot Flatwater to Pony Pasture, and take in the glory of fall without fighting the other peepers gathered at the familiar highway overlooks. Better yet, bring a picnic lunch and dock at an island or the bank in the middle of your journey. You’ll have leaves, wildlife, water and (hopefully) cool weather to help put you in touch with time truly well spent.
