A month from now, when someone asks them what they did with their summer vacation, 12 Virginia teenagers will be able to say, “Oh, not much. I paddled the entire 340 miles of the James River from its headwaters to the Chesapeake Bay, all the while taking scientific measurements of its water quality, reporting on what I saw, learning about the communities that line its banks and developing a conservation project based on my experiences.
