I-295 Resurfacing Set To Get Underway This Week

VDOT will begin a resurfacing project on I-295 south in Henrico County between the Interstate 64 interchange (Exit 53) and Route 33 (Exit 49) Sunday evening. The work will be performed weeknights between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. and some weekends during non-peak hours through next summer.
The project will involve extensive repairs to the aging concrete pavement followed by a 5.5-inch layer of asphalt. “With proper preventative maintenance, the pavement is expected to last 15 years,” said Rob Bowman, district maintenance engineer. The $6.5 million resurfacing project is the result of funds received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The following repaving projects along I-295 are under way or pending:
• Southbound from the Greenwood Road/Mountain Road interchange (Exit 45) to I-95 (Exit 43) in Henrico County – under way; estimated completion November 2009.
• Southbound from mile marker 40 to the Meadowbridge Road/Pole Green Road interchange (Exit 38) in Hanover County – pending contractor advertisement this summer; estimated completion summer 2010.
• North and southbound ramps to Nuckols Road in Henrico County (includes ramp extension) – project begins October 2009; estimated completion summer 2010.
Several sections of I-295 north were resurfaced in 2007 and 2008. The method used to repair and repave the southbound sections will be similar to what was used northbound. Built in 1985, the northwest section of I-295 is one of the oldest in Richmond. Approximately 26,000 vehicles travel along I-295 south between the I-64 interchange and Route 33 per day.
