The Southern District American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) has named Biki-Ray Mitchell, health and physical education teacher at Holman Middle School, as the 2011 Southern District Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year.

Mitchell will receive the award next month at the 2011 Southern District Convention in Greensboro, North Carolina. Winners from each of the six national districts of AAHPERD will compete in the spring for National Teacher of the Year recognition for elementary, middle and high school levels.

“This award highlights how wonderful Henrico County physical education is, and how hard our students work,” says Mitchell. “It is a reflection of the quality of education in Henrico County. My philosophy is to not waste the students’ time and to give them quality educational experiences.”

The Southern District AAHPERD aims to support and promote AAHPERD and assist in strengthening its state associations. Southern District AAHPERD serves as an advocate for quality programs that encourage healthy and physically active lifestyles. Thirteen states comprise the Southern District.

According to Holman Middle School Principal Brian Fellows, “Mrs. Mitchell is actively engaged with the students. They are constantly moving. In addition to teaching her classes, she strongly emphasizes community service to her middle school students. She’s energetic and always thinking of new ideas and new ways to improve the programs and services that the entire department is offering. The most important piece is that the kids love her.”
