In a bizarre turn of events, the grandmother of a woman killed last week when her car veered off the roadway at Springfield and Jones Roads, just northeast of Innsbrook, was struck by a car and also died near her granddaughter’s crash site yesterday. She had parked her car to lay flowers at the scene of the accident.

74-year-old Ruth Bellio and husband Joseph were struck by a sedan traveling southbound on Springfield Road as they walked across to pay their respects to their late 25-year-old granddaughter Danielle Bellio and set up a makeshift memorial. A Nissan Altima struck them just after hitting their Dodge Ram parked on the side of the road. The car continued down the road, also striking a Jeep Cherokee head-on in the northbound lane.

Henrico Police say Joseph Bellio was transported to VCU Medical Center with serious, although non-life-threatening, injuries. The accident comes just one day after Danielle Bellio’s funeral, who crashed after a four-mile police pursuit that began in Short Pump when she ran a red light near the I-64 interchange.

An investigation into the latest crash is still ongoing. We’ll continue to follow this story as new details develop.
