A fourth grader at Shady Grove Elementary School is recovering at a local hospital after being struck by a vehicle while walking to school in the Wyndham community Tuesday morning. He was crossing Wyndham Lake Drive at its intersection with Wyndham Park Drive at the time.

The student, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was hit directly in front of the school’s entrance. The driver was maintaining the school zone’s speed limit of 25 miles per hour or less at the time of the accident, according to Henrico Police. Witnesses say the boy crossed the four lane roadway after being waved on by a driver in the right lane, while the driver in the middle lane couldn’t see the boy and was struck when he walked out from in front of the stopped vehicle.

Many students who live nearby walk to Shady Grove in the mornings and afternoons. The school serves the 42 neighborhoods that Wyndham is comprised of along with several other additional communities nearby.

A crossing guard is in place at the intersection of Wyndham Lake and Millstone Landing Drives, but none have been utilized at the main entrance. Henrico County has considered the main intersection as a candidate for a traffic signal in the past two years, but no decision has been made as to whether one will be constructed.

Police say the driver will not face any charges, and neighbors tell us the boy may have suffered internal bleeding and other injuries.
