Three members of the Richmond City Council have proposed an ordinance to recognize legal same-sex marriages (PDF) performed in other states and to extend benefits to legally married same-sex partners who work for the city.

Sponsored by City Council President Charles R. Samuels and fellow council members Parker C. Agelasto and Chris A. Hilbert, the ordinance was inspired by the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to strike down section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, Samuels said.

A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for September 9.
