Congressman Bobby Scott’s Mother Passes

We send our regards to the Honorable Robert “Bobby” Scott, our distinguished Congressional representative, today at the news of his mother’s passing, Ms. Mae Hamlin Scott. As reported in today’s Richmond Times Dispatch:

Mae Hamlin Scott, 89, mother of Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, D-3rd, died yesterday, according to a report by The Daily Press of Newport News.

The congressman’s annual Labor Day picnic has long been held at Mrs. Scott’s Newport News residence.

“She instilled in me the importance of education and ethics and doing the right thing,” the congressman toldthe Daily Press.

Born Nov. 28, 1920, Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Dr. C. Waldo Scott.

The Daily Press reported that Mrs. Scott taught science in the Newport News school system from 1959 to 1981. While in high school, Mrs. Scott was a two-time national junior champion in tennis in the 1930s, a period in which blacks were not allowed to play against whites.

After graduating from high school in RaleighN.C., she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She later was an active member of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church.

In addition to her son, survivors include two other sons, Charles Scott Jr. and Dr. Jon Scott; a daughter,Valerie Price; and seven grandchildren.
