A group that encourages running among college students will hold its first-ever 10k during RVA’s own annual 10k event.
The Collegiate Running Association (CRA) will hold it’s first 10k Road Race National Championships at next year’s Ukrop’s Monument 10k on March 29th.
The CRA is a nonprofit that promotes healthy lifestyles among college students through running and other activities. Those interested in participating in the 10k Road Race National Championship must be currently enrolled in at least one college course at any level and a free member of the CRA.
“Our hope is that both social and elite college runners will want to compete in the Collegiate Running Association 10k Road Race National Championship,” said Steve Taylor, founder and cross country and track and field coach at the University of Richmond, in a prepared statement. “Ideally, social running clubs will point to our championship events as their destination races, where they can participate in a huge community event and celebrate after, while the elite athletes can come in order to determine the only true national champions in all of collegiate sports and also earn prize money in the process.”
The top ten finishers will receive prize money: $2,000 for the top finisher, $1,000 for the second, $500 for third, and so on. A new NCAA rule that took affect in August allows current Division I student athletes to accept prize money equal to the necessary expenses for competing in the sport for an entire calendar year.
“The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k is thrilled to be host to the Collegiate Running Association 10k Road Race National Championships,” said Bobby Ukrop, president and chief executive officer of Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods, the event’s title sponsor. “We think this is a great opportunity to add a unique championship event to what already is considered one of the top road races of any distance in the entire country.”
The Ukrop’s Monument 10k and the Collegiate Running Association’s 10k Road Race takes place on March 29, 2014. You may register for the Monument Avenue 10k here, and the 10k Road Race here.
