While paddling down the James River this weekend, I got a much closer look at the scaffoldings under the Powhite Parkway Bridge.

Scaffolding under the Powhite Parkway BridgeAfter getting clued in to the scaffoldings by Andrew Phinney on Sept. 20, I’ve heard from many river-goers about the structures. They are relatively harmless looking, although any of us that have seen how quickly the James can rise and can easily imagine how the scaffolding could be turn down by a quick surge after a rainstorm. Richmond is forecast to have rain for the next three days.

Linda McElroy of the Richmond Metro Authority informed me Sept. 21 by email that the project would not take long. “Our contractor is working under the bridge on scheduled maintenance (shotcrete). The equipment was lowered from above the bridge to its current location. We anticipate we have 2 to 3 weeks left on the project,” she wrote.

The thing I didn’t like to see was the hundreds of clumps of white concrete that I saw underneath the scaffoldings. I can only assume that was “misses” and that the concrete would be there to stay.
